Viva Veggies – a mini vegetable innovation. Tomato grower Gerard Koolen from Asten-Heusden is responsible for this unique concept. The Viva Veggies concept includes Milanilo tomatoes, Koniki mini cucumbers and Pepico mini peppers. Where most growers grow for the supermarkets, Koolen has clearly looked at consumer trends. Healthy, easy and really tasty, that’s what it’s all about according to Koolen.

 

The miniature vegetables are supplied in a lidded tray with a cardboard sleeve around it. He engaged a design bureau to design the sleeve. By selecting the right design and combination for it the sleeve gives the product its small-scale, cheerful and sunny appearance.

The development of the Viva Veggies marketing concept was only one aspect of the project. A complete weighing and packaging line had to be developed and installed for the project. This line partially consists of standard machines plus some specially designed sections.

A Newtec weigher, specially developed for this kind of products, is used to weigh the tomatoes. This weigher is characterised by highly efficient movement of the product through the machine, without any damage being caused to the product.

 

The weighed portions are placed in the automatically supplied trays, by a collection system. The trays are then automatically lidded. Finally the closed trays go through the Megapack sleever that places a cardboard sleeve around the product.
